Starting a blog in 2026 is easier than ever. You do not need to know how to code. You do not need a lot of money. You do not even need any prior experience.
What you do need is a clear idea of what you want to write about, and about 30 minutes to get everything set up.
I started my own blog from scratch with zero technical knowledge, and I am going to walk you through exactly how to do it, step by step.
Why Start a Blog in 2026?
A lot of people think blogging is dead. It is not. In fact, blogging is one of the most powerful ways to build an audience, share your knowledge, and even earn money online, all from your laptop or phone.
Here are a few reasons why blogging still makes sense in 2026:
– You own your content, unlike social media, where platforms can delete your account anytime
– Blogs rank on Google and bring you free traffic for years
– You can earn through Google AdSense, affiliate marketing, and sponsored posts
– It builds your personal brand and establishes you as an expert in your field
Whether you want to blog about health, travel, finance, technology, or your personal experiences, there is an audience for it.
Two Ways to Start a Blog
Before we get into the steps, you need to know that there are two main ways to start a blog:
Free blogging platforms like Blogger.com or WordPress.com. These are completely free but have limitations. You do not own your domain, you cannot fully customise your site, and monetisation options are restricted.
Self-hosted blog like WordPress.org with your own domain and hosting. This costs a small amount (around ₹3,000 to ₹5,000 per year) but gives you complete control, full monetisation, and a professional look.
If you are serious about blogging long-term, go with the self-hosted option. But if you just want to start for free and learn, Blogger is a great first step.
In this guide, I will cover both, starting with the completely free option.
How to Create a Free Blog in 2026
Option A: Free Blog on Blogger.com
Blogger is Google’s free blogging platform. It is simple, reliable, and completely free — including hosting. Here is how to set it up:
Step 1: Go to Blogger.com
Open your browser and go to blogger.com. Sign in with your Google account.
Step 2: Create a New Blog
Click on “Create New Blog”. Enter a title for your blog. This is the name people will see.
Step 3: Choose Your Address
Pick a URL for your blog. It will look like `yourblogname.blogspot.com`. Try to keep it short and related to your topic.
Step 4: Choose a Theme
Blogger gives you several free themes to choose from. Pick one that looks clean and professional. You can always change it later.
Step 5: Write Your First Post
Click “New Post”, write your content, add an image, and hit “Publish”. Your blog is now live!
That is it. Your free blog is ready in under 10 minutes.
Option B: Free Blog on WordPress.com
Step 1: Go to WordPress.com
Open wordpress.com and click “Start Your Website”.
Step 2: Create an Account
Enter your email address and create a password. You can also sign up with your Google account.
Step 3: Choose a Domain
WordPress will ask you to choose a domain. On the free plan, your domain will look like `yourblogname.wordpress.com`. Type your preferred name and select the free option.
Step 4: Choose a Plan
Select the Free plan. You can always upgrade later if you want to remove ads and get a custom domain.
Step 5: Choose a Theme
Browse the free themes and pick one that suits your blog’s topic. Click “Activate”.
Step 6: Write Your First Post
Go to Posts → Add New, write your first blog post, and click “Publish”.
Your WordPress.com blog is now live!
Option C: Self-Hosted WordPress Blog (Recommended for Serious Bloggers)
This is the option I personally recommend if you want to grow your blog into something serious. It costs money, but not much. Here is what you need:
What you need:
– A domain name – around ₹800 to ₹1,000 per year (from GoDaddy or Namecheap)
– Web hosting – around ₹2,000 to ₹4,000 per year (Hostinger is great for beginners)
– WordPress.org is completely free to install
Step 1: Buy a Domain Name
Go to GoDaddy.com or Namecheap.com. Search for your preferred domain name. Choose a `.com` domain if possible; it looks more professional. Buy it.
Step 2: Buy Hosting
Go to Hostinger.com. Choose the Premium Web Hosting plan; it is affordable and gives you everything you need. Complete the purchase.
Step 3: Connect Your Domain to Hosting
In your Hostinger dashboard, go to Hosting → Manage. Copy the nameservers. Then go to your GoDaddy account, find your domain, and update the nameservers to the ones Hostinger gave you. This takes 24 to 48 hours to update.

Step 4: Install WordPress
In your Hostinger dashboard, click “Auto Installer” → select WordPress → fill in your blog name and admin details → click Install. WordPress will be installed automatically in a few minutes.
Step 5: Choose a Theme
Log in to your WordPress dashboard at `yourdomain.com/wp-admin`. Go to Appearance → Themes → Add New. Search for “Astra”; it is free, fast, and perfect for beginners. Install and activate it.
Step 6: Install Essential Plugins
Go to Plugins → Add New and install these three free plugins:
– Yoast SEO for search engine optimisation
– WP Super Cache for faster loading speed
– Akismet for spam protection
Step 7: Write Your First Post
Go to Posts → Add New. Write your first blog post, add a featured image, set your category, fill in the Yoast SEO details, and click Publish.
Congratulations — your professional blog is live!
Tips for New Bloggers
Starting a blog is the easy part. Keeping it going is where most people struggle. Here are a few things that will help:
Pick one topic and stick to it. A blog about everything tends to rank for nothing. Choose a specific niche: health, personal finance, travel, tech, and focus on it.
Write consistently. Google rewards blogs that publish regularly. Even one post per week is enough to start building traffic over time.
Write for people, not just for Google. The best blog posts are the ones that genuinely help someone solve a problem or answer a question. Write like you are talking to a friend.
Be patient. Most blogs take 3 to 6 months to start getting meaningful traffic from Google. Do not give up in the first month.
Once your blog is live, it is also important to check your website’s spam score regularly. Read our guide: How to Check Spam Score of Website: A Comprehensive Guide
Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)
Yes, absolutely. Platforms like Blogger.com and WordPress.com offer completely free plans that let you start a blog with no upfront cost. The free options have some limitations, but they are perfect for getting started.
WordPress is more powerful and flexible, but Blogger is simpler for complete beginners. If you plan to grow your blog seriously, start with WordPress. If you just want to write and share content casually, Blogger works well.
Not at all. Modern blogging platforms like WordPress and Blogger are designed for people with no technical background. Everything is drag-and-drop or point-and-click.
A free blog on Blogger or WordPress.com can be set up in 10 to 15 minutes. A self-hosted WordPress blog takes about 30 to 60 minutes, including domain and hosting setup.
It is possible but limited. Free platforms restrict how you can monetise your blog. For full monetisation, including Google AdSense, affiliate marketing, and sponsored posts, a self-hosted WordPress blog is strongly recommended.
Final Thoughts
Starting a blog in 2026 has never been more accessible. Whether you go with a free platform to test the waters or invest a small amount in a self-hosted WordPress blog, the most important thing is to simply start.
You do not need the perfect setup. You do not need to know everything before you begin. Write your first post, publish it, and learn as you go. Every successful blogger started exactly where you are right now.
